It’s the latest craze that’s got Hollywood raving… but what exactly is it?
Last week actress Sandra Bullock revealed on the Ellen DeGeneres show, the secret to her glowing skin was something she coined ‘the penis facial’. The internet took note and soon was a buzz with stories of the facial and other celebs who were converts like Cate Blanchett. But what exactly is it? And what does it have to do with the penis?
Well, first of all, it’s correct name is the Hollywood EGF Facial Treatment and has been offered by The Georgia Louise Atelier in New York since last year. The procedure starts with a chemical peel and is followed with micro-needling. This is used to create tiny holes (essential wounding the skin) so products subsequently applied will absorb at a deeper level. A calming mask is then used before the ‘penis’ part of the treatment is put on in the form of EGF (epidermal growth factor) serum. This EGF is derived from cells of human fibroblast (essentially stem cells) taken from Korean newborn baby foreskin. Yes – that’s right! It’s thought ‘young’ stems cells work to activate ageing cells which in turn will promote collagen and elastin in the skin –attempting to make you look younger. Now just to set the record straight, the cells from the foreskin are cloned, so they are using cloned cells on your skin not the real deal. Phew!
Still, what do you think? Naturally, this raises quite a few questions on the ethics of such a treatment. And while there is no denying how good Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett look, I’m still not entirely convinced. Even if it wasn’t for the hefty $650 (US dollar) price tag I don’t think it would be something I would be testing out anytime soon. You?
